MSG Varsity
SportsCentral App

MSG Varsity is an online high school sports programming service which was also a high school sports television network that focused on the New York metropolitan area, covering schools from Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island and New York City. MSG Varsity includes this data on their nightly news coverage and daily publication on msgvarsity.com. At the time, they only had an html site that allowed coaches and Athletic Directors to post new scores, stats, rosters and edit schedules for their teams. MSG wanted an app on both iOS and Android that would allow for new content to be submitted anytime and anywhere, even live submissions during games.

Keeping the UI simple and consistent across all sports was a primary focus of mine since most schools wanted to take the responsibility off the coach's hands and allow selected student(s) access to manage the account for all of the schools sports. Unlike the website, I took advantage of the capability to store content locally until submission, giving users more flexibility which allowed users to work on multiple games at the same time on one account. Developing a consistent user flow for all sports types was key to making this fast and easy for the users.

When approaching the design of this app, I wanted to give MSG a brand and style that would engage the users. In the past, users were only able to submit content using a dated web 2.0 site. Since the new primary user group would be students, I wanted to design a modern and fun app, using iconic sports related imagery. All submission forms took the shape of classic scoreboards, such as the most historical of them all, Fenway Park’s Green Monster.

Primary function of the app involves various forms for submitting, including player stats, game results, scheduling and more. Designing a custom UI kit that was flexible for all data types needed to be an easy transition from iOS to Android. All buttons, input fields, drop downs and more, are designed to adapt to various screen sizes and resolutions.
